As I have been going around the country talking to Age UK groups about things they remembered from their childhood, home remedies is usually a popular topic. One story in particular has summed up for me the spirit of ‘make do’ and of nurturing that I’ve found.
A lady in Bury St Edmunds told me to rub a gold wedding ring on my eye if I ever have a stye or an infection. I must have looked totally bemused by this so all her pals chimed in backing up her story. It turns out that chemists sold Golden Eye Ointment antibiotic, but if times were hard and they couldn’t afford to buy it then they’d just use a gold wedding ring instead.
Really not the same thing at all, of course, but a lovely lovely story, I think.
